We are fortunate enough to see these little Gray Foxes on our property regularly.  This particular one, with the notch in it's ear, has been around for at least four years.  I took the reference photo one snowy afternoon and improvised the background.  I start a painting with layers of soft pastels and then begin applying details with pastel pencils.  Several layers of pastel make up the fox's fur.  This painting took just over 100 hours to complete.
